This BBC article on new production methods led the kobbleit crew to some new sites we’d never knew existed:
Shapeways. Create a 3D object, send them the file, they will cut it out.
Kickstarter. Post your idea. If people like it, they’ll essentially ‘fund’ your idea by buying product before it exists. At least that’s what happened to the guys in the BBC article.
The article is worth a read, but fellow kobblers will see immediately BBC left out the entire ‘garage gang’ of DIY CNC folks. Can I design a product in my garage, cut it out, tweak it, then cut it out again – all in a day? Absolutely. And nothing needs to be mailed to me.
DIY CNC, when built properly, can do everything these fancy sites will do for you (except dig up venture capital!).
